Team Newhouse
Mahrukh is a court advocate at Newhouse. In her time at Newhouse, she has helped survivors in domestic violence in many ways, and we are proud to have her as one of our court advocates standing beside survivors when they are in court, working hard to build the safe and happy life they deserve. Meet Mahrukh!
Court Advocacy
Marhukh has been working at Newhouse for 2.5 years. She first joined as an intern in Summer 2021, and within a few months she was hired as a bilingual shelter advocate. In August 2022, she transitioned to becoming a court advocate.
Many clients find both physical and emotional safety in obtaining legal protection, but the judicial system can be difficult, intimidating and overwhelming. Court advocates help survivors navigate and overcome barriers within the legal system. They fill out orders of protection with clients, accompany them to hearings, and provide emotional support throughout the process. Mahrukh is at Kansas City Municipal Court three days a week, and works onsite at the shelter with a variety of clients.
“Survivors are their own heroes, and all heroes need tools. Thor has his hammer and Captain America has his shield’ both heroes received their tools from external help.”
– Mahrukh
Survivors are their own heroes
Survivors are their own heroes, and all heroes need tools. Thor has his hammer and Captain America has his shield; both heroes received their tools from external help.
Survivors are provided resources and skills by therapists, case managers, court advocates, and other social care providers. It’s a team effort!
As a court advocate, my goal is to empower clients by providing them with tools and resources so they can break the cycle and thrive in a violence-free environment.
A team effort
“We have the opportunity to end the cycle of violence, but it’s a team effort. When we work together, and walk with survivors we can accomplish so much more.”
What brings Mahrukh joy
“When I am not working, I enjoy napping and spending time with friends and family.” 🙂
