Staff Spotlight: Keona
Team Newhouse

Meet Keona!
Keona is a Shelter Advocate at Newhouse, answering calls to the 24/7 Crisis Hotline and supporting the more than 60 children and adults living at Newhouse. Keona joined Team Newhouse in August 2017 and has been an integral part of our mission to support survivors of domestic violence. Though she briefly stepped away from Newhouse, she remained connected as a community resource for victims and returned to work directly in the shelter in April 2023. Her dedication and passion for helping others shine through every role she has held at Newhouse.
Being There for Our Residents
In her current role, Keona supports survivors who come into the shelter by completing hotlines, intakes, and exits. She ensures that their basic needs are met, provides emotional support, and attends to the overall needs of the shelter. Keona helps ensure our shelter is secure and acts as a conduit to our case management, therapy, and legal teams. Her compassionate approach makes a significant impact on the lives of those she serves.
“Your story is your truth. No one can take away your experience and accomplishments to overcome the trauma. Some days are harder than others, but no one can take away your power. It’s okay to be selfish to better yourself.”

Adapting During Difficult Times
Keona takes great pride in her ability to go above and beyond for survivors. One of her most notable contributions was during the COVID-19 pandemic, a challenging time for both survivors and staff. Keona stepped up by taking on two roles and extra responsibilities to ensure that survivors received the support they needed. She helped with meal preparation, shelter orders, and advocacy, showing extraordinary resilience and dedication during a crisis.
A Personal Connection to the Work
I am able to relate to the population we support because I am a survivor. I went through some unforeseen experiences no child and/or adult should experience. However, my past trauma does not define who I am, nor does it define other victims and survivors. It is a marathon, not a race when rebuilding the better version of yourself. Yes, it is difficult, especially when not given the proper tools for prosperity. Having the support and proper tools is important. Having such not only rebuilds the mind, body, and soul; It also gives you the opportunity to share your story with others who can help in so many ways.
Keona’s passion for supporting survivors stems from her own experience as a survivor of domestic violence. Knowing the feeling of being “lost,” she is driven to provide the resources and help that survivors need to heal and rebuild their lives. For her, the work is heart-filling and deeply meaningful.
What Everyone Should Know About DV
Keona emphasizes that domestic violence is more than just physical harm—it has a lifetime effect and can take many forms. Recognizing the warning signs, even in non-intimate relationships, is crucial. Her message to everyone is to stay informed and aware.
A Special Memory
One of Keona’s favorite memories is watching the growth of a survivor who was determined to reclaim her power. After learning and healing during her time at Newhouse, this survivor started a new life for herself and began traveling—a dream that had been stifled by her abuser. Witnessing her transformation was a powerful reminder of the resilience of survivors.
Life Outside of Newhouse
In her free time, Keona loves spending time with her son, family, and partner. She’s an avid football fan (Go Raiders!), enjoys working out, traveling, playing with her animals, sleeping, and listening to music. Her family includes her son, parents, siblings, and her animals, including her cat Moon, who she rescued from an abusive situation.
Keona’s Perspective on Life
Keona believes that setbacks can lead to greater growth. “Having a setback is a start for a greater step-up in life. It’s about your growth and doing what is best for you! No one can steal that from you,” she shares. Her strength and positivity inspire everyone she meets.
