Understanding the Vital Need of DV Resources to Stop Violence

Domestic violence affects every neighborhood, every demographic, and every age group. Survivors may experience physical, sexual, or mental abuse, emotional manipulation, financial control, stalking, and other abusive situations.

Many survivors feel isolated, unsure of where to go, or afraid of what will happen if they leave. Community resources play a vital role in helping survivors access emergency help for domestic violence, find a safe place to stay, and build a personal safety plan to work towards long‑term stability.

Kansas City is home to a strong network of organizations dedicated to supporting survivors. Newhouse is proud to be part of this network and help survivors navigate available resources.

Newhouse is More Than a Shelter. We Offer a Comprehensive Ecosystem of Support.

Newhouse is not just a domestic violence safehouse. It is a holistic, survivor‑centered ecosystem designed to meet the unique needs of individuals and families escaping abuse.

Newhouse’s ecosystem of support prioritizes equitable access by actively addressing racial and socioeconomic disparities. At no cost to our clients, we provide comprehensive, trauma-informed mental and physical health care, including individual and group therapy, crisis counseling, and recovery counseling. Our on-site kitchen prepares three fresh meals a day, and offers snacks. To foster independence, survivors can access job readiness training, education, and financial stability programs.

Practical barriers are removed through transportation assistance and legal services to clients navigating divorce, child custody, and orders of protection. Newhouse also offers trauma-informed childcare and counseling, to break generational cycles of abuse.

Mental Health and Emotional Support

Survivors often experience trauma responses such as anxiety, depression, hypervigilance, or emotional numbness. Newhouse programs provide trauma‑informed mental health services, including: individual therapy, support groups, crisis counseling, child and family therapy, and healing‑centered activities.

These services help survivors process trauma, rebuild confidence, and begin to heal emotionally.

Child and Family Services

Children are deeply affected by domestic violence. Kids may witness harm, experience emotional trauma, or be used as pawns to exert control. Newhouse offers expanded children’s services, including:

  • Full-time Early Learning Center onsite for children ages six weeks to five years
  • Children’s Center for Education and Healing for children in grades K -12
  • Summer camp and mini camps to invest in children beyond school
  • Children’s therapy (play, individual, family, and recreational)
  • Parenting support
  • Safety planning for families
  • Advocacy in school and legal settings

These services help break the generational cycle of abuse and support long‑term family healing.

Legal Advocacy and Court Support

Navigating the legal system can feel overwhelming for survivors. Newhouse provides legal advocacy to help survivors understand their rights and options, including: protective orders, custody and visitation, divorce and separation, court accompaniment, and safety planning around legal processes.

Legal advocacy empowers survivors to make informed decisions and stay safe throughout the process.
