Shine a light on domestic violence with Newhouse
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Together, we can honor the brave children and adults impacted by abuse while helping light the path to safety, healing, and hope. On the National Day of Action—Purple Thursday, October 16, 2025—and throughout the month, we invite you to shine, share, and give to raise awareness, shed light on the realities of domestic violence, and celebrate the strength and courage of survivors. Will you join us?

Shining Brighter in 2025
KC families can’t wait—domestic violence deaths are rising, and we must shine brighter now. This year, homicides in our community have reached the highest level in a decade, even as Newhouse lost more than $1 million in federal funding. The need is greater than ever, and we cannot face it alone. Your support helps us keep our doors open, provide lifesaving shelter, and give survivors the safety and resources they urgently need.
Ways TO SHARE
Sample Post: CHALLENGE SOMEONE

I am shining a light on brave survivors of domestic violence with @newhouse_kc for DV Awareness Month. I shine for the 55+ children and adults living at Newhouse. I challenge @friend to shine with me and share a photo to help survivors and Newhouse, KC’s first DV shelter. 💜 newhousekc.org/shine #NewhouseKC
Sample Post: I’M SHINING

I am shining a light on domestic violence with @newhouse_kc for DV Awareness Month. Today, over 55 children and adults call Newhouse their temporary home, but many more people in KC need safe shelter. Join me in shining a light on brave survivors! 💜 newhousekc.org/shine #NewhouseKC

Why Do We Shine?
- Domestic violence is a community health issue.
- 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men will experience abuse at some point in their lives.
- Last year, 27,095 requests for help in the KC region went unmet due to a lack of resources.
- By working together, we can stop the cycle of abuse, address the barriers that feed it, and create generational healing.
Shining A Light on Survivors at Newhouse
At Newhouse, we are proud to walk alongside strong and resilient survivors every day. This October, as part of our Shine a Light campaign, our staff are sharing stories of current or recent Newhouse clients to honor their courage and raise awareness about the realities of domestic violence. These stories remind us that while abuse thrives in silence, hope grows when voices are heard.

We invite you to join us by sharing your own story — or posting anonymously about someone who has inspired you — on social media. Tag Newhouse and use #newhousekc so we can lift up your voice and shine a brighter light together.
